The Spanish coquina quarries that built the Castillo

Anastasia Island, St. Augustine Beach, Florida

Coquina is broken shell and sand cemented into a soft limestone, and it is cut out of the ground rather than blasted. Spanish crews opened these pits on Anastasia Island in the 1670s to face the Castillo de San Marcos across the bay, where the stone's give absorbed cannon fire instead of shattering under it. The workings sit inside what is now Anastasia State Park and were listed on the National Register in 1972.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
