Tuckahoe, the village whose marble built New York

Alexander Masterson opened the first commercial quarry here in 1812, and for most of a century this mile and a half of the Bronx River valley shipped white marble south into the city. Federal Hall, the main body of St. Patrick's Cathedral and the Washington Square Arch are all cut from it. The work pulled in German, Irish and Italian labour, then Black workers arriving from the South after the Civil War. The usable stone ran out and the quarries closed around 1930.
