The St. Augustine Amphitheatre, built inside a coquina quarry
1965
Anastasia Island, St. Augustine, Florida
Florida spent six years marking its quadricentennial and this was the largest thing it built for it, finished in 1965 in one of the old coquina quarries. Two thousand of the seats were secondhand from the Polo Grounds in New York. Paul Green's symphonic drama Cross and Sword opened here on 27 June 1965, was named the official state play, and ran every summer until 1996.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
