Quincy Quarries and the granite that left holes in the hill
1963
Quincy, Massachusetts
Sswonk · CC BY-SA 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons
For more than a century Quincy sold its bedrock to the rest of the country, and the last working quarry here closed in 1963. What the industry left behind was a set of flooded pits deep enough to be a public danger, so the state filled them in and opened 22 acres as a reservation. The cut faces are now covered in graffiti and used by rock climbers.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
