The Sohmer piano factory clock tower

Sohmer and Company built a six storey brick factory on the Astoria waterfront in 1886, in the round arched Rundbogenstil, with a clock tower under a copper trimmed mansard roof. Queens took in piano makers who wanted room and cheap land, and Sohmer was one of the largest after Steinway. The plant was extended around 1906 and converted to apartments from 2007. The city made it an individual landmark that same year for its part in the piano trade.
