The Bronx piano district and the Estey clock tower

German craftsmen settling around Port Morris made this stretch of waterfront the centre of American piano manufacturing by the turn of the century, with Estey, Kroeger, Doll and Wessell Nickel and Gross all working within a few blocks. The Estey factory of 1885 to 1886 is the oldest surviving piano works in the city and its clock tower is still visible from the Harlem River bridges. Developers revived the Piano District name in 2015 to market luxury apartments, which local residents objected to.
