The Lorillard snuff mill, the oldest tobacco factory left in America

The Lorillard family bought a grist mill and fifty acres on the Bronx River in 1792 and used the current to grind tobacco into snuff. This stone building went up around 1840 to add capacity, its walls quarried from the schist alongside it. It is the oldest surviving tobacco manufacturing building in the United States, made a National Historic Landmark in 1977, and it still stands inside the botanical garden that took over the land.
