The Skokie Swift starts running from Dempster Street

The Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad shut down in January 1963 and the CTA bought five miles of its track. On April 20, 1964 the Skokie Swift began covering that stretch from here to Howard Street in six and a half minutes, funded as a federal mass transit demonstration project. Half the line ran on third rail and half on the North Shore Line's leftover overhead wire, so trains changed power source without stopping. Three and a half million riders later the CTA made it permanent.
