The Shelton School, opened in 1976 for children who could not read
1976
Dallas, Texas
June Ford Shelton opened the school in August 1976 in a borrowed church building with 48 pupils, preschool through sixth grade, all of them children with dyslexia or another language based learning difference. Enrolment more than doubled inside a year. It now runs about a thousand students across thirteen grades with an evaluation centre and a speech clinic attached, and calls itself the largest independent school of its kind in the world.
