The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, the first day school of its kind

The school opened in 1869 in a Pittsburgh church with eight pupils and a brother and sister, Archy and Sarah Woodside, teaching them. It was the first day school for deaf children in the country, a break from the boarding institutions that were the norm, and its first principal, James H. Logan, was himself deaf. The school moved out to this Edgewood hillside in 1884, lost its building to fire in 1899, and replaced it with the fireproof one that still stands. Enrolment passed 500 in the 1960s.
