The Rockville Centre train crash kills thirty-two

A project to lift the tracks over the street crossings had squeezed two miles of the Montauk Branch onto a single gantleted track shared by trains going both ways, part of it around a curve. On the night of 17 February 1950 an eastbound engineer ran an approach signal and then a stop signal and met a westbound train head on just past the station. Thirty-two people died. It stood as the railroad's worst wreck for nine months, until Kew Gardens.
