The Malbone Street wreck, the worst crash in subway history

The motormen were on strike, so the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company put a dispatcher with under three hours of instruction at the controls of a wooden five car train. He entered the curve into the Malbone Street tunnel at roughly five times the six mile per hour limit on the evening of 1 November 1918 and at least 93 people were killed. The company was in receivership within a month, and the city renamed the street Empire Boulevard by December.
