Kaiser shipyards and Vanport
1942
Swan Island, Portland
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Henry Kaiser built ships on the Columbia faster than anyone thought possible, launching one Liberty ship in under five days as a stunt. He brought in 40,000 workers, many of them Black southerners, and housed them in a hastily built city called Vanport that a flood destroyed in 1948.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
