The Rainbow Bridge was built tall enough for a navy airship tender

When the state replaced the Dryden ferry across the Neches in 1938, the deck had to clear the tallest thing that might ever come upriver. That was the USS Patoka, a navy oiler refitted with a mooring mast so it could service dirigibles. The requirement set the clearance at about one hundred and seventy six feet and made this the highest highway bridge over tidal water in the world. The Patoka never came through. A public contest in 1957 gave the span the name it still carries.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
