The Puyallup Tribe settles its land claim for the Tacoma tideflats
1988

The Treaty of Medicine Creek set the reservation in 1854, and most of it was taken apart over the following century as Tacoma and its port grew across it. In 1984 the tribe sued the Port of Tacoma and the Union Pacific over tidelands on Commencement Bay worth an estimated 750 million dollars, and four years of negotiation followed. Tribal members voted 319 to 162 in August 1988 to accept a settlement of 900 acres of waterfront and other terms, which Congress enacted the next year.
