The Cushman Indian School, sixty years of taking Puyallup children

The government opened a school on the Puyallup reservation in 1860 and expanded it twice, first into a reservation boarding school and then into an off reservation one drawing children from far beyond the tribe. It was renamed in 1910 for Congressman Francis Cushman and turned toward trade and industrial training. The point of the system was to strip Native children of their languages and families, and it ran here until 1 July 1920, after which the buildings became an Indian hospital.
