Hoopa Valley, a reservation on its own ground
1864
Hoopa, California
The largest reservation in California, and unusual in that its boundary was drawn around the valley the Hupa already lived in rather than moving them somewhere else. They have occupied the same twelve-mile stretch of the Trinity for thousands of years. The tribe runs its own forestry, courts and fisheries, and the White Deerskin Dance is still held.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
