The Battle of Lake Erie
1813
Put-in-Bay, South Bass Island, Ohio
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Oliver Hazard Perry's homebuilt squadron beat the Royal Navy off Put-in-Bay in September 1813, the first time an entire British squadron surrendered, and his dispatch afterward stayed in the language: we have met the enemy and they are ours. The victory gave the Americans the lake and the Northwest. A 352-foot Doric column on the island, taller than the Statue of Liberty, marks it and the peace that followed.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
