Houston digs itself a deepwater port fifty miles inland

Turning Basin, Houston Ship Channel, Texas

Houston sits fifty miles from open water, so the city dredged its way to the sea. Mayor Horace Baldwin Rice took a delegation to Washington offering to pay half the cost of a twenty five foot channel, the first time a local government had matched federal money on a rivers and harbours project, and that bargain became the model for federal cost sharing everywhere. The channel and this turning basin opened in 1914. Every refinery town on these banks followed from it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
