The Baldwin Hills dam breaks on live television
1963
Baldwin Hills, Los Angeles, California
On December 14, 1963 the earth dam holding the Baldwin Hills Reservoir began leaking at its east abutment. Crews had about three hours to clear the streets below before it gave way, and 290 million gallons emptied into the neighbourhood in 77 minutes. Five people died and 277 houses were destroyed. Helicopters carried the collapse live, and investigators tied the ground movement under the dam to subsidence from the oil field next door.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
