The Paddock Viaduct, the first self-supporting reinforced arch in the country

Ferries and low water crossings were the only way over the Trinity at this point until a suspension bridge went up in the 1890s, and it was quickly too small for the traffic. The concrete arch that replaced it in 1914, designed by the St Louis firm of Brenneke and Fay, was the first in the United States built with self-supporting reinforcing steel, so the arch carried itself during construction. It is named for B. B. Paddock, a newspaper editor and former mayor.
