The Orpheum, Madison's surviving movie palace
1926
216 State Street, Madison, Wisconsin

A 1920s movie palace a block off the Capitol, put on the National Register in 2008 as the best thing Madison has left from the era when going to the pictures meant walking into a room built to overwhelm you. Its neon sign over State Street is the one everybody photographs. It survives by being a music venue most nights, which is how nearly all of them survive.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
