The Grand Lake Theatre and its 2,800 bulb rooftop sign
1926
Grand Lake, Oakland, California
The Grand Lake opened in March 1926 as a vaudeville and silent picture house designed by the Reid brothers, at a cost of about a million dollars. The rotating sign on its roof measures 52 feet by 72 feet and carries 2,800 coloured bulbs, the largest rotary contact sign west of the Mississippi. The marquee underneath it is used by the theatre's owner to post political messages, which is how most of the East Bay knows the building.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
