The Stanley Theater, Vailsburg's Spanish movie palace
1927
Vailsburg, Newark, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Stanley opened on South Orange Avenue on 26 May 1927 with two thousand seats, built for the Stanley Fabian chain by the Newark architect Frank Grad. Spanish styling was the fashionable choice for a picture house of that moment, and this one was built for the Vailsburg end of the city rather than for downtown. Films gave way to use as a social hall in the 1970s, and the building went onto the National Register in 1986.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
