The Old West Side, the first streetscape historic district in the country
1972

William Maynard began cutting this land west of town into lots in 1845, and German immigrant families filled it with small frame houses and front porches. When it went on the National Register in 1972 it was listed not for any single landmark but for the character of the streets themselves, the first district in the country recognised that way. Neighbours had organised the Old West Side Association five years earlier to fight off redevelopment.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
