The Hammond circus train wreck kills 86 Hagenbeck-Wallace performers
1918
Hammond, Indiana
Early on 22 June 1918 an engineer on a military troop train fell asleep and ran into the back of a stopped Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus train carrying about 400 performers and roustabouts. Eighty-six people died and 127 were hurt, most of them in the wooden sleeping cars at the rear. It remains one of the deadliest railway accidents in American history, and the circus borrowed acts from rival shows to keep touring within days.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
