The Great Train Wreck at Dutchman's Curve

Two passenger trains on the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis line ran head-on into each other at this curve on the morning of 9 July 1918, both moving at something near 50 miles an hour on a single track that had been cleared for each of them in turn. The crew of No. 4 was meant to hold and wait until it had seen No. 1 go by, and did not. At least 101 people died by the Interstate Commerce Commission's count, with some reports as high as 121, and 171 more were hurt.
