Tacoma Speedway, the board track that rivalled Indianapolis
1915
Lakewood, Washington
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Racing started here on dirt in 1912, and in 1915 the oval was rebuilt as a two mile wooden board track with turns banked eighteen feet, using two million board feet of lumber and fifteen tons of nails. Barney Oldfield, Eddie Rickenbacker, Ralph DePalma and both Chevrolet brothers came for purses that ran to twenty five thousand dollars. It got a reputation for killing drivers, burned in 1920 and closed for good in 1922, and Clover Park Technical College stands on the ground now.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
