The Leiper Railroad, the first American railroad built to be permanent
1810
Nether Providence Township, Pennsylvania
Thomas Leiper wanted a canal to move stone from his quarries on Crum Creek and could not get the rights of way, so in 1810 he laid three quarters of a mile of horse drawn track to a landing on Ridley Creek instead. It is the first railroad on the continent built as a permanent work rather than a temporary construction line. He replaced it with the Leiper Canal in 1829, then tore the canal out and put the railroad back in 1852.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
