The Louisville and Portland Canal

The Falls of the Ohio were the only break in a two-thousand-mile river, a drop that forced every boat to unload and portage, which is the whole reason a city grew here. A canal was cut around them at last, two miles of stone locks that let a steamboat pass the rapids for the first time. It is still the only way through, run now by the Corps of Engineers, the oldest thing of its kind still working on the river.
