Katrina's surge ran up the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet and the Intracoastal Waterway and burst into St. Bernard Parish and the Lower Ninth Ward. The Corps of Engineers answered with a concrete pile wall almost two miles long across both channels, with navigation gates that swing shut ahead of a storm. It went into service in 2011 and was completed in 2013. Locals call it the Great Wall of St. Bernard.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
