Katrina hits Mississippi hardest
2005
Waveland, Mississippi
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The eye came ashore east of New Orleans and put the strongest side of the storm on this coast, with a surge near thirty feet, the highest ever recorded in the United States. Waveland and Bay St. Louis were effectively erased, block after block reduced to steps and slabs. Because the levee failure in New Orleans was the larger political story, most of the country never learned what happened here.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
