The tidal strait between Staten Island and Bayonne runs about three miles long and a thousand feet wide, and it is the only ocean route in and out of Newark Bay. That makes it the neck every container ship bound for Port Newark and Port Elizabeth must pass. The Army Corps of Engineers spent from 1989 to 2011 cutting it deeper in stages, 35 feet to 40, then 45, then 50, so fully loaded modern ships could get through at all.
