The Sam Houston Ship Channel Bridge clears the tankers by 175 feet

The tollway crosses the ship channel here on a span opened in May 1982, built high enough that loaded tankers pass 175 feet underneath. The main span runs 750 feet. Everything that reaches the refinery docks at Pasadena, Deer Park and Baytown goes under this bridge, which is why the road had to climb rather than lift.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
