Captains' Row, where the oyster captains of Mariners Harbor built
1850
Mariners Harbor, Staten Island, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The captains who carried seed oysters in and Staten Island oysters out grew rich enough in the 1840s and 1850s to line the shore road, now Richmond Terrace, with two storey wooden houses facing the Kill Van Kull. The stretch was known locally as Captains' Row. Most of it is gone. The Stephen D. Barnes house of 1853 survives as a landmark, and the oyster beds themselves were closed by pollution in 1916.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
