The Highland Park church a senator and a lake captain paid for

Highland Park, Michigan

A frame chapel for interdenominational services went up behind this site in 1868, became an Episcopal chapel in 1885, and was sold to the Methodists in 1892 for one dollar and the assumption of its debt. Senator Thomas Palmer and Thomas Stevens, a retired Great Lakes captain, put up the money for the Gothic church that replaced it, built between 1916 and 1917 as Highland Park filled with Ford wages. The old chapel came down in 1956. The building went on the National Register in 1982 and now houses Soul Harvest Ministries.
