The African Methodist Episcopal church was founded in Philadelphia in 1816 by free Black Americans who walked out of a segregated congregation, and after emancipation it spread fast through Texas. Joshua Chapel's brick sanctuary went up on North Aiken Street in 1917, a few blocks east of the courthouse square in the part of Waxahachie where the town's Black families lived and worked. It was added to the National Register in 1986 and the congregation still uses it.
