Georgia and Emory jointly built this psychiatric hospital in 1965 on the grounds of the old Briarcliff estate, and Emory doctors treated patients and trained psychiatry residents there. Rising costs closed it in 1997, when it held 141 beds against a 24.5 million dollar budget the state argued would stretch further in community mental health. Emory bought the 42 acre campus, the empty buildings spent years as a standing film location, and demolition followed.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
