Morrisania Hospital closes in the fiscal crisis

The city opened this 400 bed municipal hospital on Gerard Avenue in 1929, an eleven story Italian Renaissance block by Charles B. Meyer serving a South Bronx that had no other public hospital of its size. In January 1975 the Health and Hospitals Corporation board voted to shut it, under pressure from Mayor Abraham Beame to cut spending, and it treated its last patients on 30 June 1976. The building stood empty for twenty years before reopening in 1997 as apartments, a job training centre and a clinic.
