Rosemont, the streetcar suburb built beside Alexandria's station
1908

Investors from Washington, Alexandria and Philadelphia laid out 84 acres beside the new Union Station between 1908 and 1914, betting that clerks would live here and ride the trolley to work in the capital. They were right, and more than 450 houses went up in Craftsman, Foursquare and Arts and Crafts styles. It is one of the clearest surviving pictures of what a middle-class commuter suburb looked like before the car.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
