The first recorded baseball match, at Elysian Fields
1846
Elysian Fields, Hoboken, New Jersey
The Knickerbocker Base Ball Club took the ferry over from Manhattan to play on a stretch of open ground along the Hoboken shore called the Elysian Fields. On 19 June 1846 they played the New York Nine there under the written rules Alexander Cartwright had helped set down, and lost 23 to 1 in four innings. It is the earliest match between two clubs anyone kept a record of. Clubs played here until 1873.
