The first tennis in America is played at the Staten Island Cricket Club
1874
Staten Island, New York
Mary Ewing Outerbridge had watched British officers play lawn tennis in Bermuda, and in 1874 she and her brother Emilius strung a net on the club's grounds at Camp Washington. The club had been incorporated two years earlier as a cricket and baseball club, and it became the first tennis venue in the country. It held the first national tennis tournament played in the United States in 1880, a year before the championship moved to Newport.
