Shoeless Joe's Greenville
1908
Greenville, South Carolina
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Joe Jackson learned baseball in Greenville's textile mill leagues, played barefoot once because new cleats blistered, and carried the nickname to a.356 career average and the 1919 Black Sox scandal that banned him for life. His hometown never accepted the verdict: his house was moved across town and made a museum opposite the minor-league park, and the statue downtown gets baseballs left at its feet.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
