Mills College, the second women's college west of the Rockies
1871
Seminary, Oakland, California
Mills began as the Young Ladies Seminary in Benicia in 1852, moved to a wooded site in East Oakland in 1871 and took its present name in 1885, making it the second women's college west of the Rockies. In 1990 the trustees voted to admit men and the students shut the campus down for two weeks until the decision was reversed. It stayed a women's college at undergraduate level until 2022, when it merged into Northeastern University.
