Vassar opens for women

A brewer put up half a million dollars for a women's college with a faculty and a library meant to match any men's college in the country, and hired Maria Mitchell, the first professional woman astronomer in America, to teach in an observatory built before the classrooms were finished. It went co-educational in 1969 after turning down a merger with Yale.
