Bryn Mawr College opens a route for women to the doctorate
1885
Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania
The college opened in 1885 as a Quaker foundation and was among the first women's colleges in the United States to carry students all the way through to a PhD, at a point when most American graduate schools would not admit them at all. It is one of the Seven Sisters, and now enrolls roughly 1,350 undergraduates and 450 graduate students. The name is Welsh for high hill, borrowed from a neighbouring estate.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
