Joliet Junior College, the first public community college in America
1901
Joliet, Illinois
In 1901 the township high school superintendent J. Stanley Brown and William Rainey Harper of the University of Chicago started offering two more years of college work to six students in the high school building. By the end of 1902 the board had made those courses free. Every public community college in the country descends from that arrangement.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
