Los Angeles Southwest College opens two years after the uprising
1967
Los Angeles, California
Residents had pressed for a community college in this part of South Los Angeles for years, and Odessa Cox is credited as its principal founder. The Board of Education set aside 2 million dollars in January 1967, and classes opened that September with more than 600 students and 22 full time faculty. The college is a direct answer to the McCone Commission's finding that the schools serving Watts and its neighbours were failing the people who lived there.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
