The Fashion Centre opens and Pentagon City stops being warehouses

Developers had bought 190 acres of fields and warehouses here in 1946 and waited decades for something to happen. The Metro station opened in 1977 next to an empty lot, and by the end of the 1980s the mall and the towers around it had arrived. More than 140 shops sit above the station platforms, with a Ritz-Carlton built into the same structure.
