Los Arcos Mall, the hockey arena that never was
1969
Scottsdale, Arizona
Los Arcos opened in 1969 and spent the 1990s losing its shoppers and both its anchor stores to Scottsdale Fashion Square. Phoenix Coyotes co-owner Steve Ellman bought the dying mall in 1996 to build an NHL arena on the site, and although voters approved it in 1999 the opposition was heavy enough that the team built in Glendale instead. The mall closed that November and was demolished, and the ground sat empty until ASU and the city put the SkySong technology campus on it in 2009.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
